Definition of Some Cryptographic Concepts

• Encryption is the transformation of plaintext (regular text) into ciphertext (random sequence of bits).

• Decryption converts plaintext to ciphertext, which is the opposite of encryption.

• Cipher: A cryptographic algorithm or mathematical function that transforms plaintext into ciphertext. 

• Key: A small amount of data is necessary to cause the cryptographic algorithm's output.

Types of Cryptographic Algorithms

Symmetric-Key Cryptography

For this encryption technique, only one key is used. The same shared key can be used for both encryption and decryption.

The problem of securely transferring the key between the sender and the receiver arises when using a single common key. Another name for it is secret-key cryptography. 

This kind of cryptography ensures that both the sender and receiver know the key.

Symmetric-key cryptography may be broken down into two categories: block ciphers and stream ciphers.

The keys in stream ciphers frequently change because they operate on a single bit at a time. On the other hand, block ciphers encrypt one block of data at a time, as the name implies.

In this case, though, the same block of plaintext will always be turned into the same ciphertext.

Asymmetric-Key Cryptography

An encryption key and a decryption key, designated as the public key and private key, respectively, are used in this encryption technique.

The key pair produced by this algorithm comprises a private key and a unique public key also made by the algorithm. It also goes by the name "public-key cryptography." 

When the environment is constantly changing, and data is transferred between various communication partners, asymmetric cryptography is used.

Its high scalability is the cause of this. When using this type of cryptography, one party generates the secret key and encrypts it using the recipient's public key. Using their private key, the recipient can then quickly decrypt it.

The secret key will be used as the encryption key for the remainder of the communication once the connection has been made.

In contrast to symmetric keys, the issue with asymmetric keys arises when the public key must be authenticated. Any malicious third party has the potential to alter the public key.

But using public-key infrastructure, this issue can be resolved. The ownership of the keys is verified using this method by certificate authorities, another third party.

The "web of trust" technique is another one that can be used to guarantee the authenticity of the key pair. 

Hash Functions

This type of encryption doesn't require any sort of secret key. It takes the plaintext and uses a cipher to create a hash value of a specific length. Recovery of plain text's contents from the ciphertext is essentially impossible.

As a result, the hash function serves as a unique code for each piece of content.

This method changes plaintext data of any length into ciphertext data of a certain length. Although hashing and encryption are not the same, the definition of a hash function makes it seem that way. The main difference between the two is that encryption needs the hash value to be decrypted, but hashing doesn't.

It works so that plaintext data is put in, and then a mathematical algorithm turns that data into something that can't be read.

The output, which serves as a unique identifier, is known as the hash digest, hash value, or hash code.

Robust hash algorithms have characteristics like determinism, resistance to preimages, resistance to collisions, good speed, and the avalanche effect (also known as the snowball effect).

Cryptographic Hashing: Data security on the blockchain?

A hashing function is a mathematical formula or function used in hashing. The input is changed into a form that is hard to understand and can only be put back together by the function.

No matter how long the input is, the output must be the same length. For instance, the SHA-256 algorithm generates a hash that is 256 bits long (or 64 characters) in the Bitcoin blockchain, which is used in the Proof of Work algorithm. 

There can be no similar output from two inputs that are slightly different from one another, such as a capital letter and a small letter.

No matter how often the same input is hashed through the function, the result is always the same. Unfortunately, it's too late to turn back now. What this means is that you cannot get the input by hashing the output backward from the output.

Let's review what a blockchain is and how it works: It's a chain of blocks, and each block stores some information along with a hash or output. If the data ever changed, the hash would need to be updated as well. Also, each block is linked to the one before it because a hash of the previous block is made for each new block.

That's why if there were a data change in a single block, the resulting hash would be different for every block. Since the data in a blockchain is immutable and securely linked, this is a crucial part of blockchain data security.

Cryptography Use Cases on the Blockchain

Let's examine the uses of cryptography in the blockchain since it was previously mentioned that it is a crucial component of blockchain technology. Asymmetric-key algorithms and hash functions are the two cryptographic algorithms used in blockchains.  

Thanks to hash functions, every participant has access to the functionality of a single view of the blockchain. The SHA-256 hashing algorithm is typically used for the hash function in blockchains.

The blockchain benefits from using cryptographic hash functions in the following ways:

• Avalanche effect: A slight change in the input data can greatly impact the output.

• Uniqueness: Every input results in a different output.

• Deterministic: The output will always be the same if any input is passed through the hash function.

• Rapidity: The output can be produced in a very brief period.

It can't be reverse-engineered, which means that we can't get the input from the output and hash function.

The blocks are linked to one another, and hash functions largely maintain the integrity of the data stored inside each block. Any change to the data in a block can cause inconsistency, which makes the blockchain useless. The "avalanche effect," a characteristic of hash functions, satisfies this requirement. 

This means that even if we change the input to the hash function just a little, the result will be very different from the first result. Below, let's compare the outputs of an SHA-256 hash function as an example.

Cryptography and the Blockchain Consensus Protocol

Proof of Work

Bitcoin was the first to use the proof-of-work method of transaction verification. The blockchain's blocks each have their own unique hash code. Every block in the blockchain must contain a hash function for this proof-of-work mechanism. The proof of work portion is manageable, but the hash generation is challenging. The miners carry out this generation phase to address various puzzle types. They create a hash, compare it to the block's hash, and determine whether it is less or equal. 

If it is lower or the same, it shows that the transaction went through without being tampered with. Because there is competition in this process, the miner who generates the hash first receives a reward and a transfer fee. The process of verification is referred to as "proof of work." One miner can generate the hash, and another can verify it simultaneously. The SHA-256 hash function algorithm is used in the bitcoin transaction process to create hashes with a fixed length of 64 bits.

Proof of Stake

Proof of stake (POS) is a consensus mechanism used by blockchain networks to achieve distributed consensus, validate cryptocurrency transactions, and stake coins or set them aside for selection as a validator at random.

Proof of Stake is an alternative to Proof of Work, which was the first cryptocurrency consensus mechanism. Proof of Work was based on "mining." 

However, because proof of stake has proven far more energy-efficient, it has become popular as attention has shifted to how crypto mining affects the environment.

Proof of Stake vs. Proof of Work

Proof-of-work (POW) and proof-of-stake (POS) are ways for people to agree on something. They help the blockchain network keep data in sync and keep it safe.

The POW consensus mining and validation processes consume a significant amount of energy. Because of climate change, many people believe this consensus is immoral. POW is becoming less popular because there aren't any good ways to make it use less energy. 

While both mechanisms have proven effective, POS is faster, less expensive, and more efficient.

Don't just take our word for it. Even Ethereum, the 600-pound gorilla in the room, agrees and is migrating to an improved version known as ETH 2.0. More on that in a moment. 

Aside from energy consumption, the fundamental difference between these two mechanisms is how they handle network duplicity.

Can You Mine Proof-of-Stake? 

In exchange for the chance to validate blocks, token holders put up their tokens (or coins) as collateral. Owners of staked coins are referred to as "validators." The block is then "mined," or validated, by validators who are chosen at random. Rather than using a competition-based mechanism like proof-of-work, this system randomly determines who gets to "mine."

Solana Blockchain 

Solana's network uses a proof-of-stake (POS) and proof-of-concept (PoC) protocol that Solana calls "proof-of-history" (POH). Many people run programs on a specialized computer called a validator on the Solana network. These validators play a key role in the Solana blockchain. It keeps the network running, keeps it safe, and processes new transactions by voting and adding new blocks to the chain of blocks.

This means that its consensus algorithm uses votes from the pool of validators in the blockchain to make sure that everyone has the same accurate information and that the ledger is always correct. 

All blocks have to have 66% of the voters agree that the transactions are justifiable to be included in the chain of blocks. But if agitators control more than 33% of voting power, then consensus would fail, and the network would be stopped.

The "Mechanism of Consensus" describes how all the validators in the network reach this point that they all agree on. This is a core requirement for building a successful decentralized network.

Proof of History (POH)

Proof of History is a system proving that transactions are in the proper order and were found by the right leader.

Solana's blockchain is subdivided into periods where a validator ingests transactions and creates a block. A validator is chosen to be a slot leader through the proof of stake mechanism based on the quantity of SOL held. Each validator is responsible for continuing a count of the passage of time, known as a "proof of history order."

Cardano Blockchain

Cardano is a third-generation, decentralized proof-of-stake blockchain network. It is a more efficient alternative to proof-of-work (POW) networks. The infrastructure burden of increasing costs, energy use, slow transaction times, limited flexibility, interactiveness, and durability of POW networks like Ethereum are eliminated on Cardano.

The Cardano platform uses a ground-breaking POS Ouroboros consensus protocol. It is the first blockchain network consensus to be developed through peer-reviewed research. 

At the center of the protocols are stake pools, validators run by a stake pool operator to which Ada holders can delegate their stake.

These stake pools make sure that everyone can keep a node running, no matter how much technical knowledge or time they have.

Their responsibility is maintenance, and they hold the combined stake of all stakeholders as one entity.

Avalanche Blockchain

Many view the Avalanche Consensus Mechanism as a more advanced POS. When using POS, peers must stake coins to validate transactions, and the same is true when using POS. However, the validation procedure itself is not the same.

The Avalanche POS Mechanism works like a snowball rolling down a hill. One node polls a predetermined number of other nodes, asking for their individual decisions and seeing if there is consensus on a single answer. In that case, it would be considered a consensus. A snowball, or avalanche, of queries and decisions, is created when each node queries a set of other nodes and then repeats the process. The overwhelming support of nodes is required for a decision to be adopted by the network.

In Avalanche POS, transactions can be batched and voted on collectively, rather than individually, unlike in other mechanisms. One way the Avalanche Consensus Mechanism speeds up TPS is by decreasing the time spent validating transactions. 

Algorand Blockchain

Algorand is the first emerging Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) blockchain that provides flexibility, security, and decentralization—all in an eco-friendly, sustainable way.

This PPoS protocol is built on Byzantine consensus and offers a more democratic approach than its predecessor, Proof of Stake (POS).

Despite the success of the proof-of-stake protocol in addressing scalability issues, they can still be controlled and manipulated by stakers with high amounts of tokens, which negatively impacts decentralization.

To address the most pressing issues of POS protocols, Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS), was initiated and developed by the founder of Algorand and renowned cryptographer Silvio Micali.

The protocol is very swift and requires minimal computational power per node for efficient transactions. Each token holder's influence on the choice of a new block depends on its stake in the system. Algorand's PPoS method ties the security of the whole economy to the honesty of the majority, not just a small part of the economy.

Contrast: Bonded Proof of Stake (BPoS), Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), and Pure Proof of Stake 

So how does the PPoS differ from other POS models? 

It has to do with the standard of decentralization. Let's take two well-liked POS variants:

• Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), and;

• Bonded Proof of Stake (BPoS).

Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS): The DPoS contains a fixed number of nodes called delegates. These delegates are responsible for producing blocks, which are selected in a round-robin order. They are also voted on by token holders, whose voting power lies in the number of tokens they own.

In this case, we only derive a system that does well in a transaction throughput but forfeits decentralization and hence doesn't meet the Blockchain Trilemma issue. In contrast, the PPoS network does not have a select few, and the system selects validators at random, regardless of stake. But since there is no special group of validators, it is difficult for attackers to compromise the system.

Bonded Proof of Stake (BPoS): No form of delegates is involved in this network. Users must lock up a certain amount of their token in order to stake and influence the blocks that are produced or added to the blockchains.

They lock up their stake for a period of time in order to become validators. Their voting power is proportional to the stake. This adds more advantages to wealthy participants. PPoS is different from Bonded Proof of Stake in that users don't have to lock up their tokens in order to be able to help make blocks.

Market Cap: An Overview

Market cap is used in traditional financial markets to better understand a company's size and overall value. It’s calculated by multiplying a company's share price by the number of shares outstanding.

For example, if a company has 1 million shares outstanding and its stock price is $50, its market cap would be $50 million.

The market cap is necessary because it gives investors an idea of how much a company is worth.

If a company has a high market cap, investors believe it has a lot of growth potential.

For example, let's say that a token has a price of $1, and there are 100 tokens in circulation. The market cap would be $100.

The circulating supply is important because it gives us an idea of how many tokens are actually available to trade. A coin with a low circulating supply may be more attractive to investors because there is less supply available and it may be harder to buy.

Market Cap vs. Volume

Now that we know what market cap is and how it's used in the world of cryptocurrency let's look at how it compares to other important metrics.

One metric often used in conjunction with market cap is "volume". Volume is the number of tokens traded in a given period.

For example, if 100 tokens are traded daily, the volume would be 100.

Volume is significant because it gives us an idea of how active a market is. A market with a high volume is considered more active and liquid than a market with a low volume.

Total Value Locked (TVL)

TVL, or Total Value Locked, is a metric used to assess the value of cryptocurrency locked into DeFi protocols. As the name suggests, TVL represents the total value of crypto assets deposited into DeFi protocols and cannot be accessed or withdrawn until a specific condition is met.

For example, when you deposit crypto into a lending platform, that crypto is considered "locked" until you enter into a loan agreement with another party and agree to repay the loan with interest.

TVL provides a snapshot of how much value is currently being locked into DeFi protocols and can be used to assess the health of the DeFi ecosystem. TVL can also be used to track the growth of individual protocols over time. 

For example, if Protocol A has a TVL of $1 million and Protocol B has a TVL of $10 million, it's safe to say that Protocol B is growing faster or has been in the game substantially longer than Protocol A.

It's important to note that as markets rise and fall, meaning bear and bull markets, TVL will change as the price of the tokens changes with the market.

TVL VS. Market Cap

When it comes to evaluating a cryptocurrency, two key metrics are often used: market capitalization and total value locked. We’ve discussed these already, but how can a new crypto investor use these figures to research a project? 

Both of these numbers can give you some insight into the health of a given cryptocurrency, but they measure different things.

Market cap is simply the total value of all coins in circulation. So, if there are 100 million units of a given cryptocurrency, each unit worth $1, then the market cap would be $100 million. TVL, on the other hand, measures the value of all coins that are currently locked up in the form of loans, Curve model locking, staking, etc...

Using Aave as an example, it says right on its website that there is more than $7 billion in TVL. This is across 7 networks and 13 markets. It doesn't mean that the Aave token is worth anything close to that. According to Coinmarketcap, which is a decently reliable source of information, the market cap of the Aave token is roughly $1.1 billion. These are very different numbers.

Generally speaking, a higher market cap indicates a more established and well-known cryptocurrency.

In contrast, a higher TVL shows a currency that is being used actively and has attractive rewards for locking long-term or attractive rates for lending, among many other reasons. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, but it is an excellent general guideline to follow.

Aave is a rare example of a project with a high TVL and market cap. It's one of the most trusted DeFi lending protocols, having been battle-tested for years.

Before we go into the modern-day intricacies of Centralized finance, let's take a stroll down memory lane. During the 19th century, we witnessed many central banks spring up in many European countries, with centralized finance formally invented in Mesopotamia around that same period in time. 

Since its advent, humans have devised and used various items and assets to depict their form of currency. From land to livestock, Human beings had used these assets as a means of value for exchange until more recently when they started making use of fiat currencies. This gradual evolution of what "value" could be represented by simply shows that currency could either have intrinsic worth or be given an imputed value, with such being the case with fiat currencies. 

Man's desire to have a stable currency and financial system stem from way back, and every attempt at doing so have revolved around the concept of a centralized institution. If this is the idea of cefi in everyday economics, what does it mean in crypto terms?

cefi is you banking on Centralized companies and exchange platforms to keep your funds safe. Such companies include the likes of Libra and Coinbase, and they have certain policies in place, such as the Know Your Customer (KYC) policy and Anti Money Laundering (AML) Policy that further reassures you of your money's safety.

You get to create accounts with these platforms and use them to send, receive and exchange tokens. Additionally, you get offered other services besides crypto trading services, such as lending, borrowing, or margin trading services. 

Despite all of these, cefi crypto platforms have certain limitations too. With cefi crypto platforms, you do not have full authority and control over your crypto assets. Your crypto assets are managed outside of the scope of your control, and as a result, centralized exchanges have been targets of high-level cyber-attacks.

But customers on cefi platforms choose to keep their faith in these platforms as they believe their funds put into these exchanges won't be used for any illegal activity. cefi platforms go a step further to prove their credibility by having entire departments equipped to assist customers with any complaints they may have. 

Features Of Cefi(Centralized Finance)

1. Cross-chain swaps services: Centralized finance enables you to trade your cryptocurrencies using independent Blockchain platforms. With DeFi, you run into a roadblock as these atomic cross-chain exchanges are very complex and take longer to complete, but not with CeFi. 

With cefi, you get this problem solved as cefi obtains assets from multiple chains. Having this leverage against DeFi in this regard is significant for CeFi. 

2. Centralized Exchange: The name "Centralized Finance" should have given this away as one of its numerous features. With CeFi, you get to be in charge of your portfolio, no matter how vast it is, with your internal account, and you also help avoid incurring large transaction fees on the Blockchain. Your funds being on the exchange means you don't need to worry as they are managed centrally by the system and securely. 

3. Flexible Conversion: In this area, CeFi also has one up over DeFi. With CeFi, you convert your crypto assets into money and vice versa. This gives you the flexibility you won't usually get with DeFi.

One of Blockchain's most powerful features is that you can trade high-volume financial assets without trusted intermediaries. DeFi capitalizes on this by utilizing smart contracts and cryptocurrencies.

The former has helped amplify financial technology, and now, you won't need the services of a financial institution in your transaction because your smart contract can do it all for you. 

With DeFi, you get to manage a plethora of services, including Over-the-counter trading, staking, asset management, financial data, and many more. And while DeFi is compatible with some of CeFi's products, such as leveraged trading and asset exchanges, three things set it apart: Its Transparency, how accessible it is, and the amount of control you, as the user, get. 

DeFi platforms have taken it upon themselves to erase any shady agreements or back deals that may dent their transparency, a worthy cue for their CeFi counterparts to follow. They also make their platforms accessible so that anyone with a decent knowledge of internet use can design and deploy DeFi goods.

They also give control to their users to ensure that nothing can be done to their crypto assets without their permission. 

In line with this is the absence of a central authority(who would approve or deny access) and the enablement of seamless peer-to-peer transactions with Blockchain and its group of miners handling all operations. 

Features of DeFi( Decentralized Finance)

1. Doesn't Require Permission Protocols: With DeFi, you can access its Blockchain without needing approval or permission. An upside to this feature is that you get to be a part of a community of like-minded traders where you interact and enjoy the greater accessibility it offers. 

2. Endless Innovation: The innovations in Blockchain technology never stop, with every new day being a unique opportunity to test and develop new capabilities. The DeFi ecosystem is laden with various innovative financial services even at its early stages, an excellent sign of a bright future. 

3. Trustless: This feature enables you to authenticate everything for yourself. You don't need to bank on the system to perform as advertised; you can simply audit their code and use tools like Etherscan to verify if your transaction was properly executed.

Examples of Decentralized platforms include the likes of Augur, cyber, and Totle, to mention a few. 

Defi Vs. Cefi: What Differentiates these two?

We can say two of them have the same goal but take two different routes. The goal is to get the world to adopt Blockchain, but while they look to achieve that, there are prevalent differences between these two.

1. Atomicity: The Blockchain is set up to allow actions to be performed sequentially. Due to the vast volume of financial transactions carried out per minute, transactions are rendered atomic, leaving behind two possible options: Either the transaction gets completed as a whole or fails altogether. 

This attribute of the Blockchain is only attainable in Defi as CeFi currently doesn't have it. There is hope that certain legal agreements get signed amongst the cefi platforms to enforce atomicity in the nearest future.

2. Custody: Unlike CeFi. DeFi grants the user sole control over his assets without relying on nuances from any financial institution. While this is commendable, it comes with its challenges and responsibilities. Users of Defi platforms are left at the mercy of technological hazards. This con of Defi has led to the popularity of cefi platforms in this regard, as they act as custodians to keep and manage Cryptocurrency assets on behalf of their teeming customers.

3. Transaction costs: This is an ordinary occurrence in the world of DeFi, and transaction costs are set to avoid spam. On the other hand, CeFi can choose not to charge transaction costs simply because of their KYC and AML policies put in place.

4. Security measures: On multiple occasions, the security structures of CeFi platforms have been breached, which is not due to a lack of effort by these platforms to amp up security measures, though.

With DeFi, their users only have to worry about the code(s) and consensus algorithm used to set up the decentralized finance project.

5. Conversion flexibility: cefi has the upper hand here. Trading Cryptocurrencies into fiat currencies is easier on cefi because these conversions require a centralized institution, and cefi platforms provide that. Most Defi providers do not have that, which has led to significant onboarding on the part of cefi platforms and a better customer experience. 

6. Cross-chain services: Another aspect where CeFi has the upper hand. DeFi services do not support trading Bitcoin and other primary crypto tokens due to the time taken and how hard it is for them to complete atomic cross-chain exchanges. cefi platforms obtain assets from multiple chains, which helps them solve cross-chain exchanges' problems.

7. Malleability of Execution Order: Users working on permissionless Blockchain often share the details of their transactions with their peer-to-peer network. This order malleability has opened up the Defi world to numerous manipulation tactics; this doesn't hold in CeFi networks.

What the regulatory organizations do is put in place stringent and binding requirements that help regulate financial institutions and the services they offer. This has been made possible by the centralized nature of CeFi's financial intermediaries. 

8. Anonymity: There is more anonymity among users using DeFi than those using CeFi platforms. When making transactions on CeFi platforms, such as converting fiat currencies to cryptocurrencies and vice versa, you can do so because of the current AML policy.

This Anti-Money laundering policy put in place by the exchange bequeaths them the power to reveal address ownership to law enforcement agencies in the case of any illegal activity. Defi projects such as non-privacy-preserving smart contracts are handled by individuals who are granted pseudo-anonymity by the Blockchain. 

9. Working/Market Hours: It's All gas, no brakes for Defi platforms, partly due to the nonstop nature of blockchains. Defi markets are open round the clock, round the year. This means there is no pre or post-market trading, whereas, in cefi, we see markets experience regular outages. A Prominent example is the Nasdaq stock exchange, which only works during weekdays through the hours of 9:30 am to 4:00 pm (EST)

10. Inflation: While inflation might mean the devaluation of an existing currency supply brought about by the injection of a new supply of that currency, it doesn't mean it always happens that way. 

There are instances when the money supply increases without triggering a hike in the inflation rate. In the cefi World, governing financial institutions, i.e., central banks, are the ones in charge of printing the fiat currency. The value of a representative basket of consumer products is often used to determine the inflation rate, a phenomenon known as the consumer price index. 

On the flip side, the supply of Cryptocurrency assets is subject to change due to their limited availability. This, in turn, means there will be periods where they will be a scarcity in the currency, and due to its absence of a block reward, it is susceptible to security instabilities. 

Whether Bitcoin and other major crypto tokens will suffer income disparity is left to be seen, but there is no indication that cryptocurrencies will solve this problem.

Let's be clear on a few things; The perfect world occurs when these two co-exist, and ultimately they have the same goal: to power the economy while providing top-tier financial goods and services.

They both have their pros and cons, and there has been no method proven just yet to combine them rather than to allow them to take their respective place in modern-day financial architecture. 

CeFi promises that your funds will remain safe and that you get fair compensation and returns whenever you trade. On the other hand, Defi brings to you the blueprint of a middle-man-free Blockchain space, a world where an investor can come in with his strategy and get to implement it right away without having to deal with any intermediary body. 

Whichever side of this divide you choose to camp on is now on you. If you want a high sense of transparency and privacy, you can choose DeFi, but if you want more flexible options, more opportunities to invest, and, ultimately, a network you can trust, you should choose CeFi.

Blockchain ledgers contain two records forms: transactions made by individuals and blocks. There are timestamps to creating a chain of blocks; this is called a hash. Hashing algorithms that link a block to an existing block make it highly improbable to guess the length of a particular hash by manipulators.

When the first block, which has a header, has been created, any other block in the ledger will calculate its hash using the previous block's hash.

Validation or consensus is required for the addition of a new block. Nodes in the system must verify the block's authenticity before confirmation by agreeing that the hash length has been calculated correctly. 

Blocks successfully added to the blockchain ledger can neither be changed nor modified; they can only be referred to in creating other blocks.

A second group rarely acknowledged or discussed is the billions of people who do not have access to a banking system.

The Tokenomics of Bitcoin

Bitcoins are both inflationary and deflationary, so new coins are created with each block successfully mined. At the moment, making a new block earns miners 25 bitcoins. 

Since the number of rewards is halved every four years, it is also deflationary. The user base has consistently increased, and the demand for Bitcoin will increase as it grows in popularity because it gives users access to recently created Bitcoin and encourages them to use it.

Ethereum Basics

Ethereum isn't just a blockchain. It's a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts. These contracts are basically some code that runs exactly as programmed without any possibility of fraud or third-party interference. 

The Ethereum protocol and its blockchain have a price for each operation or transaction fee, usually referred to as "gas".

The general purpose of Ether, Ethereum's token, is to pay for computation within the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It is used to pay transaction fees, pay for miner rewards before the merge, and as a general unit of account.

One Ethereum blockchain transaction can take seconds, whereas Bitcoin transactions can take up to an hour or more. Ethereum's popularity has grown exponentially over the years.

The initial success was primarily due to the Initial coin offering craze. ICOs are a way for companies to raise money by issuing their own digital tokens in exchange for investment.

They work similarly to the way IPOs work on the stock market. Every new token ran an ICO for a couple of years, and Ethereum was the favorite chain for new projects to release.

Proof of Work (POW) VS. Proof of Stake (POS)

In a Proof-of-Work system, miners compete to validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. The first miner to validate a transaction and add it to the blockchain is rewarded with cryptocurrency.

In a proof of stake system, validators stake their cryptocurrency to validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. The more cryptocurrency a validator stakes, the more likely it will be selected to validate a transaction. If a validator validates a transaction and adds it to the blockchain, they are rewarded with cryptocurrency.

Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages. Proof of work is more secure because it is more energy intensive and thus more expensive to 51% attack. However, Proof-of-Stake is more scalable because miners do not need to compete for rewards.

In addition, proof of stake does not require as much energy, which makes it more environmentally friendly. Ultimately, both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, and which one is used depends on the project's specific needs.

Since its inception, Ethereum has operated on proof of work. As of The Merge, it is now on proof of stake.

The Merge

The Merge was executed on September 15th, 2022. Despite a Y2K-like atmosphere surrounding the official date, with many investors unsure what would happen, The Merge occurred with a few hiccups, and the network continues to run smoothly. It is now using 99% less energy.

Unfortunately, the miners had to find new homes with other tokens like Bitcoin and Dogecoin.

Native Tokens VS. Wrapped Tokens

Native tokens are the native asset of a given blockchain, such as Ethereum's ETH or Bitcoin's BTC. Wrapped tokens are ERC20 tokens representing another asset, such as wBTC (wrapped Bitcoin) or wETH (wrapped Ethereum).

There are benefits and drawbacks to various token types. Native tokens generally have better liquidity and price discovery, as there are more buyers and sellers of the asset.

However, wrapped tokens can offer greater flexibility, as they can be traded on any platform that supports ERC20 tokens.

For example, you can buy ETH on Coinbase, as that platform works on the Ethereum blockchain. But Bitcoin doesn't exist on that chain. So to buy Bitcoin on Coinbase, you have to purchase wrapped Bitcoin. What you buy isn't BTC. It's wBTC.

When you transact on the Ethereum blockchain, you pay gas fees in ETH. But if you have funds on Fantom, you would have wETH and instead pay your gas fees in FTM, and the amount of wETH in your wallet wouldn't change.

DeFi

Defi, on the other hand, stands for Decentralized Finance. These projects are often built on Ethereum and offer more significant opportunities for returns, but they are riskier and less regulated. Nevertheless, many investors believe DeFi's potential rewards are worth the risks.

To purchase ETH in a decentralized way, you first need to on-ramp funds to a centralized exchange and then move them into a DeFi wallet. The most popular one right now is called MetaMask.
